About MCIN

History and Background

Manchester Community Information Network (MCIN) was formed in 1993 with the following aims:

  • to bring together information providers across sectors to reduce duplication
  • to identify gaps in information provision
  • to generate support for a co-ordinated strategy to deliver an electronic public information system to benefit to the citizens of Manchester

MCIN became a Limited Company in 1995, a Registered Charity in 1996, and now has a clear role in facilitating public access to community information utilising Information Communication Technology (ICT). Through ICT, MCIN is delivering a live service, enabling the public to find information and participate in community activity.

Since 1999, MCIN has become more of a community development organisation that supports communities to develop portal websites. We provide capacity building work to communities and voluntary and community sectors. We are working to mainstream our services but at the same time continue to innovate and push boundaries. You can read more about ‘Community Information’ and bringing communities together in our Articles and Downloads page.
